Our success is not measured strictly by the weight loss while in the program. By involving family and providing an after care program to ease the transition out of WCP, we are committed to enabling long-term weight management .

Loveable Foods that Love You Back

Wellspring Community Programs teaches a very low fat diet, with a target of less than 20 grams of fat per day. Unlike fad diets that focus on carb-counting or complex balancing of many different criteria, our low fat diet is simple, sustainable, and based on scientific evidence. Participants enjoy a menu that is low fat, low calorie-density, high protein, and high fiber. This low fat diet is proven to help weight loss and weight maintenance, particularly for those biologically predisposed to weight gain. Our studies have also shown that participants who maintain a low fat diet do not crave food and report very low levels of hunger, both important criteria for long-term success.

The testament of success is based on the ability to follow a program in a "real world" setting. This is why the Wellspring program includes nutrition education and culinary training, along with grocery shopping and restaurant visits. The ultimate goal is for participants to recognize healthy foods and learn how to incorporate them into everyday life.

Move to Lose

Television, video games, and car rides all contribute to a sedentary lifestyle, one which must be replaced by an active lifestyle for long-term weight control. Every Wellspring participant strives to reach a minimum of 10,000 steps per day.

Walking is only the beginning of the fitness program. We expose children and teens to many types of indoor and outdoor recreation activities-aerobics, cycling, jogging, basketball, swimming, softball, and rock climbing, to name a few-because when students succeed at these activities, this can inspire improved physical fitness for years after they complete their Wellspring program.

Living the Healthy Lifestyle

Although our program has unparalleled success in helping achieve weight loss results, our true focus is on changing behavior. With the help of Behavioral Coaches, our masters or doctoral-level therapists, participants work to overcome psychological or emotional troubles that inhibit permanent changes to diet and fitness behaviors.

Self-monitoring food intake and activity level, journaling about progress, and goal-setting are all vital skills taught our program. These skills help participants assess their progress and form the basis for the group and individual therapy sessions.

The Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) taught by our Behavioral Coaches reinforces self-monitoring skills, along with improving participants' frustration tolerance, stress management, and coping mechanisms.

Lasting Success

Before joining our program, many children and teens are in a downward spiral of continued weight gain, with physical and emotional ailments contributing to and leading to more weight gain. We break this cycle and put participants on a new path to a healthy lifestyle.

Throughout the program, we involve the families, as parents and siblings are a vital component of ensuring continued progress. Behavioral Coaches provide regular status updates and are readily available to help track progress, while weekend sessions where the entire family is invited build awareness of program goals.

The transition out of the Wellspring Community Program is managed by our After Care program, where self-monitoring and continued communication with the Behavioral Coach is made available online.
